After a Psychiatric Hospitalization: What Do I Do Now?
Why is follow-up necessary?
Outpatient follow-up after psychiatric hospitalization is a key component to effective treatment. The number of days between the hospital discharge and follow-up appointment is important: A longer delay increases the likelihood individuals will not do what has been recommended (such as enter a treatment program or follow instructions for filling prescriptions).
Health Net Federal Services, LLC (HNFS) recommends any TRICARE beneficiary who receives inpatient behavioral health services should attend an appointment with a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker within one to two weeks after leaving the hospital. Even if you think you feel better, you may still have questions about future treatment, home care, medications, support groups and other issues.
How can I make an appointment?
All HNFS psychiatric hospitals are required to arrange a seven day follow-up visit prior to the discharge. However, if you realize after leaving the hospital you do not have an appointment or you are not able to keep the one that was arranged, call your psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker and set up a new one right away.
