How Is CAD Treated?

If you have CAD, your doctor may recommend heart–healthy lifestyle changes, medicines, surgery, or a combination of these to treat your condition and prevent complications.

Heart–healthy lifestyle changes include:

  • Aiming for a healthy weight
  • Physical activity
  • Heart–healthy eating
  • Stress management
  • Quitting tobacco use
  • Getting adequate sleep

Medications

Your doctor may recommend medicines to manage your risk factors or treat underlying causes of CAD. Some medicines can reduce or prevent chest pain and manage other medical conditions that may be contributing to your heart disease.

Surgical Procedures

Procedures may be required to treat more advanced CAD symptoms. The most common procedures involve opening up clogged arteries or bypassing the blocked arteries with healthy arteries to improve blood supply to the heart.
