Using the Correct Military Identification Card Number
Social Security numbers (SSNs) are not printed on Department of Defense (DoD) identification (ID) cards. The current ID card contains the following identifiers:
- DoD ID Number – a 10-digit number that is not used for TRICARE claims, eligibility, or authorization and referral purposes.
- DoD Benefits Number (DBN) – an 11-digit number that relates to TRICARE benefit eligibility. This number is located on the back of the card.
TRICARE beneficiaries issued DBNs are not required to provide SSNs to receive care. Please comply with your TRICARE patients' preferences in regards to providing DBNs or SSNs.
When submitting claims, prior authorizations and referrals for TRICARE beneficiaries, please use the sponsor's SSN or the 11-digit DBN.
For eligibility verification, use the sponsor's SSN or 11-digit DBN with our online eligibility tool. Providers should use the sponsor’s SSN when verifying eligibility through the Interactive Voice Response system at 1-844-866-WEST (1-844-866-9378), or transfer to a call center agent if you only have the DBN.
