Symptoms and Diagnosing

The main symptoms of depression are a noticeable change in mood, feeling down, have a sense of hopelessness about the future, and may have trouble with focus or concentration. Many people lose interest in their lives and think about suicide. Physical symptoms are also common. These include changes in appetite and weight, sleeplessness, loss of interest in sex, loss of energy and motivation, and feeling exhausted or tired. 

If you are experiencing some or all of these symptoms, it is important to talk to a primary care provider or mental health provider and get assessed. 

There are several different types of depression and related disorders. Some of them are major depression disorder, persistent depression disorder (dysthymia), premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and bipolar disorder. You and your doctor can discuss your specific diagnosis.
