History of Choosing Wisely

National health organizations representing medical specialists worked with ABIM by asking their providers to identify tests or procedures commonly used in their field whose necessity should be questioned and discussed. Between 2012 and 2023, more than 80 specialty societies highlighted examples. There were as many as 120 topics and over 500 recommendations provided. While these examples are no longer maintained and available on the Choosing Wisely website, specialty societies are encouraged to publish individual lists of these recommendations.

Recommendations should not be used to establish coverage decisions or exclusions. They are meant to spur conversation about what is appropriate and necessary treatment. Providers and patients should determine an appropriate treatment plan together.
